Diary of TEF Impact – Benin Republic 2024

I traveled to Benin Republic this week, with a packed itinerary focused on strengthening partnerships, that drive economic growth across West Africa.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to see three powerful ways we drive impact in Benin, in the programmes of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, the Africapitalism impact of Heirs Holdings’ integrated power strategy, and UBA’s pan-African financial services footprint.

Sèmè City

My first stop was at Sèmè City, Benin’s innovative tech city, and a partner of the Tony Elumelu Foundation since 2019. Led by CEO Claude Borna, Sèmè City is shaping the future of Africa.

Together, we have empowered young entrepreneurs, equipping 399 of the 799 TEF beneficiaries in Benin, with the skills to transform their ideas into high-impact ventures.

During my visit, I saw the impressive outcomes of this collaboration, hearing firsthand how the $5,000 TEF grant has transformed businesses in tourism, health, energy, ICT, fashion, and agriculture. These success stories exemplify our mission to improve lives and drive Africa’s transformation.

TEF Alumni: AfriCereal

Another highlight was my visit to the factory of AfriCereal, a business co-founded by TEF alumni Steve Kouakou Hoda and Maya Hodou. AfriCereal is a wonderful example of the power of African youth and the transformative impact of entrepreneurship. AfriCereal’s innovative work in the agricultural sector is not only driving economic growth, but showcasing the immense talent and potential within our continent. They currently employ 10 employees and generate $15,000 in revenue annually, a testament of impact.

Public Sector Stakeholders

I talk about Africapitalism; a call for partnership between the public and private sectors, we saw this in action in Benin.

I paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Water and Energy, Samou Adambi Seïdou, and the Minister of Finance, Wadagni Romuald. These discussions were critical, as their dedication to improving access to electricity across West Africa perfectly aligns with Heirs Holdings’ integrated energy strategy. Together, we are working to transform Africa’s energy landscape, ensuring reliable electricity for millions and driving sustainable development across the region.

Visit to UBA Branch

Lastly, I made a stop at one of our UBA branches in Benin. Engaging with both staff and customers, I was reminded of the important role UBA plays in delivering exceptional service and empowering communities. Our commitment to providing world-class banking services extends beyond borders, and every interaction strengthens our resolve to drive financial inclusion across Africa.
