My Speech at the Dinner Co-hosted by TEF & WFP on the sidelines of UNGA79

  • We are not here tonight as philanthropists, investors, or business leaders. We are here because we share a common cause—advancing peace and prosperity in our world.
  • When I listen to Cindy speak, it always reminds me of the immense challenges we face in the 21st century, especially now. We must come together.
  • Those of us who are fortunate enough to afford three square meals must think about the 718 million people around the world who do not know where their next meal will come from. We owe it to them to act.
  • We are ready, Cindy—ready to work with you, collaborate, and partner to make the world a better place. When people are hungry, they are angry. And when people are angry, they can be destabilising.
  • Businesses cannot thrive when people are hungry. And yet, hunger has become almost a way of life for so many. We must work together to end this.
  • At the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which my wife and I founded in 2010—not out of an abundance of wealth, but out of a commitment to make the world better—we have supported over 7,400 young African men and women, especially in the area of food security. But we need to do more.
  • I am proud to say that the Tony Elumelu Foundation is committed to joining the World Food Programme’s fight against Hunger initiative. We stand with you, ready to work, ready to support.”
  • We are all here because we understand that a peaceful, prosperous world is impossible where people go unfed. Let us join forces to make this vision a reality.
