Today, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Academy graduates the 8th cohort of our “Graduate Management Accelerated Program (GMAP)” — a program focused on nurturing young African professionals and equipping them with the skillset to drive the deepening of the financial services sector in Africa.
Moments like this remind me of my own journey, the pivotal training and development and mentoring that shaped me. It remains my lifelong commitment to ensure others get this same opportunity.
At Heirs Holdings, our mission is simple: to improve lives and transform Africa through strategic investments in critical sectors of the economy. Training the next generation is an integral aspect of our mission as a Group, which today’s UBA Graduate Management Accelerated Program exemplifies.
This year, 398 young Africans, out of over 100,000 applicants, from across Africa, will graduate in this cohort. After months of rigorous training across departments, from Treasury to Sales, Marketing to Customer Service, Financial Accounting to Risk Management, these talented professionals are now equipped to accelerate their banking careers and drive progress on the continent.
For me these young UBA Graduates are a testament to who we are; a truly pan-African Group, that invests in African talent.
This milestone is more than just numbers. It signifies UBA’s commitment to youth empowerment.
Unemployment is the greatest challenge we face– a tragic and cruel betrayal of a generation. We know governments alone cannot create all the jobs we need – so it is up to us, the African private sector, to partner our governments in improving lives and livelihoods. This is Africapitalism, and it is gratifying to see UBA play its part. UBA is dedicated to creating a positive impact, through the GMAP programme UBA is creating employment, boosting economic growth, and transforming lives across Africa.
To reiterate what I said to our graduates from the UBA Academy; what you owe us and every other African youth, is your success. Let your success signal and inspire others to achieve greater success.
Thank you to the Group Managing Director of UBA – Oliver Alawuba, and his executive team for the continued success of this programme.
